As chemical pesticides face mounting scrutiny for their harmful effects on human health, biodiversity, and soil ecosystems, farmers worldwide are revisiting traditional, nature-based pest management solutions. Among these, cow dung stands out as a surprisingly effective and completely natural pest control agent โ one that has been used by Indian farmers for generations.
Cow dung contains naturally occurring compounds including phenols, cresols, and indoles, along with various volatile organic compounds that are inherently repellent to many insects and pests. Additionally, beneficial microorganisms in fresh cow dung compete with and suppress harmful soil pathogens, creating a hostile environment for pest larvae and disease-causing fungi.
Cow dung slurry applied around plant bases and tree trunks acts as a powerful termite deterrent.
Diluted cow dung water sprayed on leaves makes the surface inhospitable for soft-bodied insects.
Fresh cow dung mixed with water and sprayed on crops helps prevent powdery mildew and rust.
Burning dried cow dung produces smoke that is a highly effective natural mosquito repellent.
Cow dung compost improves soil biology in a way that suppresses harmful nematode populations naturally.
Fields treated with cow dung are reportedly less attractive to locusts during swarm events.
Two ancient Indian formulations โ Jeevamrit and Panchagavya โ use cow dung as a primary ingredient combined with cow urine, curd, milk, ghee, jaggery, and water. These biostimulants not only nourish plants but also significantly boost their natural immunity against pests and diseases. Farmers using these preparations report 40โ60% reduction in pesticide costs.
